The banking industry is ripe for disruption yet it has proved difficult for challenger banks to break in to the UK. By contrast, in the US, challenger banks have found it easier to make inroads into banking. There is a long tradition of community banking, with around 14,000 banks vying for business, compared to the handful of British banks which have enjoyed a stranglehold on the industry.
But entrepreneurs are changing all that and virtual banking provides the opportunity for them to disrupt the market.
